COOPER & FRIEDMAN’s attorneys have handled high-profile cases throughout Kentucky.
Some of our more notable cases include:
Cooper & Friedman, Together with Attorney Greg Simms, Represent the Estate and Wife of Josey Martin – 2024
Cooper & Friedman and its attorneys, together with attorney Greg Simms, are representing the Estate and Wife of Joseph “Josey” Martin, who was strangled and smothered by Marion County, Kentucky Sherriff Deputies on December 17, 2022. Although this occurred in 2022, the news media is only now picking the story up. It is the hope of the family that this will lead to a further investigation and potential prosecution, if warranted, of the deputies involved. Mr. Martin was unarmed and cuffed when the three deputies threw him to the ground on the side of a rural road in Lebanon, Kentucky, beat him, sprayed him with pepper spray, and tased him before eventually strangling and smothering him by kneeling on his neck and applying excessive force to his head and neck, which resulted in his death, following a minor charge of public intoxication. The family and their attorneys welcome an appropriate investigation into these events by the proper authorities.
Cooper & Friedman, Together with Attorney Greg Simms, Welcome the U.S. Dept. of Justice Probe
Cooper and Friedman, together with attorney Greg Simms, welcome the U.S. Department of Justice’s probe into Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) practices. We believe that scrutiny by the federal government of those practices is warranted considering the history of the department, as documented in the media, and what appear to be irregularities by the department in connection with its policing and racial practices.
Cooper & Friedman, with attorney Greg Simms, represent the Estate of D’Juantez Mitchell – 2019
Cooper & Friedman together with attorney Greg Simms are representing the Estate of D’Juantez Mitchell, a young African American man who was fatally shot by an officer of the Louisville Metro Police Department in May 2019. The Department concluded that the officer acted properly, however, information about the shooting uncovered to date suggests that the Police Investigation was incomplete and in some cases contradictory. Cooper & Friedman and Mr. Simms have filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Mitchell’s estate and 2 young children. Pridemore v. Lexington Fayette Urban Government – 2013
In this case, a Lexington man was arrested and taken to the Fayette County Detention Center. At the time of his arrest and prior to his release, he was highly intoxicated and had informed the police and other law enforcement officers that he would kill himself. He was released from the jail in less than 2 hours, while still intoxicated. He promptly took his own life by hanging himself. Cooper & Friedman represented the man’s Estate and his Wife and child in claims for damages against the officers and government agencies which allowed these tragic events to occur. This claim was settled for a confidential amount. To view more information about this case, click on the link(s) below.

Brewer v. Whitely County – 2010
In this case, a young man was brutally beaten by a deputy sheriff. The Sheriff’s Department argued that the deputy was rouge and that he was not acting on their behalf. They also argued that the Plaintiff resisted arrest and was trying to obtain a gun. It was also argued the department and sheriff were immune from legal action as County agencies and that they were not subject to being sued. Cooper & Friedman sued in Federal Court and obtained a jury verdict for the young man for $6,300,000.00. To view more information about this case, click on the link(s) below.
